Bucolic and Mime

This year’s Fall Langford Seminar will treat the topic of bucolic and mime. Scholars of international standing will present papers during the day-long seminar on November 5. They include Marco Fantuzzi (Columbia University), Costas Panayotakis (University of Glasgow), Regina Höschele (University of Toronto) and Joan Burton (University of Maryland). They will speak on a variety of topics: post-Theocritean pastoral; Hellenistic mime; Virgil’s Eclogues; and the Byzantine novel.

The Seminar, under the direction of Francis Cairns, Professor of Classical Languages at FSU, is an annual event. Many of the papers presented at the Seminar are eventually published in PLLS, the Proceedings of the Langford Latin SeminarPLLS, which is edited by Francis Cairns, first appeared in 1976 as the Papers of the Liverpool Latin Seminar, and from 1989-1998 was Papers of the Leeds Latin Seminar. In 2003, when Professor Cairns moved to FSU, it became Papers of the Langford Latin Seminar, a title which honors the Langford Family, whose generous benefaction to the department enables it to host conferences and colloquia.
