2015 Elizabeth Hunter Memorial Lecture

This talk investigates Homer’s use of divinatory messages in the second half of the Odyssey, as a way to express the subterranean messages that Odysseus and Penelope pass back and forth. I will present a reading of their reunion as one that happens not just on the level of conscious awareness but also at a level of unselfconscious intuition... another way of thinking about divination, and the relationships between the divine and human worlds, in ancient Greece.
