Graduate Admissions Requirements

For the M.A.:

  • a BA or Baccalaureate from an accredited university
  • 3.0 GPA in all upper-division work and a minimum of 1100 on the GRE (combined verbal and quantitative)
  • sufficient undergraduate work to warrant study at the graduate level
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a statement of purpose
  • a writing sample not to exceed 20 pages

For the Ph.D.:

  • an MA from an accredited university
  • Students without MA, generally admitted to the MA program, may apply to the PhD program (see Graduate Bulletin for details)
  • a 3.5 GPA in previous graduate level course work
  • GRE scores of at least 1200 combined (with not less than 600 on the verbal section)
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a statement of purpose
  • a writing sample not to exceed 20 pages

University regulations require applicants to submit applications for admission to both the Department of Classics and to University Admissions.

The Application Package for the Department should include the following:

  • the Departmental Application Form (completed on-line) is available here
  • Statement of purpose
  • A writing sample not to exceed 20 pages
  • Three letters of recommendation. There is no separate form for these letters. Please ask your recommenders to send their letters directly to:

The Application Package for University Admissions should include the following:

  • The University's Graduate Admissions Application Form (available here)
  • Two official copies of your transcripts
  • An official report of your GRE score
  • $30 processing fee (check made payable to the Florida State University)
  • Supporting residency documentation, if applicable.
