WelcomeThe Department of Classics at Florida State University is the oldest in Florida and has emerged as one of the leading centers of classical studies in the United States. The faculty in Classics is distinguished in teaching and research. Several members of the faculty have received university and national teaching awards. The department boasts special strengths in many areas of classical studies, including archaeology, ancient history, and Latin and Greek literature. The Department also plays an important role in training Latin teachers for the schools. The Department offers students the intimacy of a small liberal arts college in the midst of a large state university. There is an enthusiastic community of approximately 80 majors and 45 graduate students. There are a variety of student organizations, including the Archaeology Club and Eta Sigma Phi.

Congratulations to Dr. Nancy de Grummond who served as respondent for the colloquium session at 2021 AIA/SCS Conference.
The Department has been informed of the passing of Dr. Joseph “Joe” Plescia, Professor Emeritus of Classics, on October 24, 2020 in Tallahassee. Dr. Plescia taught in the Department from fall 1962 until spring 1998.
The annual Classics Department ceremony honoring its newly graduated students will be held via Zoom on Friday, April 23, 2021, at 4:00 pm. For details, please contact the Main Office (850-644-4259).
The Department of Classics at Florida State University is pleased to announce that Prof. Melissa Lane, Class of 1943 Professor of Politics and Director, University Center of Human Values, Princeton University, will deliver the Spring 2021 Langford Family Lecture, entitled “Plato on the Value of Rule: Three Dimensions in the Republic, Statesman, and Laws.” The lecture will take place on Thursday, March 4, 5:00–7:00pm EST on Zoom.
This year's Elizabeth Hunter Lecture will be given on Thursday, February 18, at 6:00 pm by Professor William M. Murray, Mary and Gus Stathis Professor of Greek History and Director of the Ancient Studies Center, University of South Florida.
