The Department of Classics offers several minors, which are open to all Undergraduate students regardless of major. A Classics minor offers students flexibility to explore different aspects of the ancient Mediterranean world, and to pursue interests like archaeology, ancient history, and classical literature and culture.
Classics minors require a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours in Classics, Greek, or Latin:
Classics
A minor in Classics requires four courses listed under Classics Department offerings in classical archaeology and art history (ARH), ancient history (CLA/EUH), and classical literature and culture in translation (CLA/CLT). With the approval of the Classics Department, appropriate courses in Greek and Latin may be included in this program. Note that not all ARH or EUH courses offered at FSU count towards the minor in Classics.
Greek
The minor in Greek may consist of any four courses listed under departmental offerings in Greek language and literature (GRE/GRW), including courses at the 1000 level (provided this does not duplicate the foreign language requirements for the baccalaureate degree) or at any appropriate higher level.
Latin
The minor in Latin may consist of any four courses listed under departmental offerings in Latin language and literature (LAT/LNW), including courses at the 1000 level (provided this does not duplicate the foreign language requirements for the baccalaureate degree) or at any appropriate higher level.
Although no courses used in satisfying major, foreign language, or general studies requirements may also be counted toward the minor, students can count courses that satisfy certain University requirements (such as oral competency) towards their minor. For the most up-to-date requirements for completing a minor, consult the General Bulletin, Undergraduate Edition.
Students do not need to meet with an advisor in Classics before deciding on a minor in Classics, but are encouraged to contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in Classics with any questions or to discuss minor requirements.
